Training

Poached Creative offers six or twelve week placements for long-term unemployed or disadvantaged people to work alongside professional writers and designers as part of our creative team.

90% of our trainees go on to paid work, internships or further training
We also support specific projects such as the BBC Hackney Academy, reporting and presenting for Heart n Soul, event reporting for Discover Young Hackney and film making for Hackney Hounds. Read more about co-creation and facilitation.
"Really interesting few weeks on the reporting and presenting module...I now know that I am 100% sure that I want a career in some sort of media."
Lilly, member, Heart n Soul media team

Bringing young people's ideas to life: Staying Safe project

Poached Creative is working with Peabody to help young people in London create their own campaigns about staying safe. Projects in progress include an anti-knife crime poster, a web app for mobiles, a music track and a play to go into schools. Young people involved have the chance to work with creative professionals including photographers, illustrators, directors, actors, producers and filmmakers to gain skills and build their portfolios.

"Programmes like these, I guess, that's what changes the situation."

Follow their progress on the blogs: poster, mobile, music, play.

Writing and communications traineeships
Writing and communications trainees work with us one or two days per week (9.30am-4.30pm) over an initial period of six weeks, learning all aspects of writing for print and web in a unique mix of structured training and work experience. All trainees work on real projects for Poached and its clients.

The training will be tailored to individual trainees needs and covers the following core units:
  • introduction to communications
  • writing essentials
  • writing for the web and social media
  • interviewing
  • introduction to editing.

Trainees may also do modules in:
  • feature writing
  • reviewing and opinion writing
  • writing to sell (copywriting)
  • writing press releases
  • working with designers
  • scriptwriting.

To find out more about the experience, read our case studies of past trainees and take a look at Chris' blog or Angela's blog.

Outcomes
100 per cent of our trainees gain skills and confidence as a result of working with us and 87 per cent go on to paid work, internships or further training.

All trainees improve overall in their own assessment of their knowledge of, and skills and experience in:
  • interpersonal communication
  • web technologies
  • written communication
  • writing for the web.

The experience also helped the majority of trainees to find a sense of direction.

Comments from trainees
"My existing skills in things like teamwork, verbal comms, and patience have improved. My writing style has changed totally (for the better!) and I now know how to structure a piece of writing. Also my level of confidence has gone up because I feel I have accomplished something."

"Beyond my wildest dreams."

"Confidence in my own ability, interview skills, experience writing for professional organisations, feedback about my writing…wish it could have been more than one day a week."

"I've gained a lot more confidence in my writing since I started with Poached...I've also been very grateful for Jess's support, especially in terms of my depression."

"I feel more equipped, more confident, more motivated...kind of, more alive as well as more happy."
