The Poached Creative trainees were treated to a tour of the new BBC centre last week, thanks to their mentor Grant and BBC correspondent Emma Jane Kirby.
The tour included the newsroom – one of the largest in the world -and the BBC News 24 studios, the original 1930s management board room, and the BBC Radio One and One Extra studios, where they saw Sara Cox live on air!
Trainees had the exciting opportunity to talk to two BBC correspondents and ask them questions about journalism and the BBC.
Other highlights of the tour included a glamorous secret entrance for celebrity guests of Radio One, the original Tardis from Doctor Who, and a sighting of famous comedian Al Murray!
Poached trainees got their chance to be ‘real’ presenters for the BBC News and Weather, using a special mini-studio for tour guests.
This was Poached Creative trainee Ismail’s favourite part of the tour:“I saw a bunch of school kids let loose on it, and they were finding it fun, and then we got on there, and we found it just as much fun! I thought it was clever, it was fully interactive … it felt like walking in on the set.”

Poached Creative turns four!
Poached Creative celebrated its fourth birthday on 15 April with a
get-together for trainees, past and present.
In four years, we’ve had the privilege of working with a vast range of
people and organisations, including large clients such as the Department of
Health and Plan UK and local groups like creative arts company Heart n Soul and
Hackney charity Off Centre. Furthermore, our clients really appreciate our
unique approach to projects. In response to our work on their social media and
e-newsletters, vinvolved East London said that “Poached Creative offered a very
tailored and supportive communications design service to exactly suit our
needs.”
We’ve provided media and communications training to more than 170
people, both through Poached’s in-house training programme and via outreach
events such as Discover Young Hackney and Radio 1 and 1Xtra Hackney Academy.
Many of our trainees have gone on to further training and employment.
Appiah had been unemployed for over three years until he came to Poached
Creative. After completing the training, he found work as an editorial
assistant for the NHS Confederation. “Poached Creative gave me a chance to do
something that I wanted to do. I was able to use my skills and I was with
people who were prepared to share skills and teach me something.” Find out what
our past trainees are up to now.
Jessica Smith, director and founder of Poached Creative, says: “It’s
hard to believe that it has been four years since I began the pilot programme
with two trainees in Wood Green library. Working with people from so many
different backgrounds and nurturing their talents is so rewarding and gets me
out of bed in the morning. I’m so proud of what we’ve achieved.”
With your help we're continuing to grow - we now employ five people and
support a pool of talented freelancers. Keep an eye on our portfolio and news page and follow us on Twitter.

All Aspects - our unique youth media team

We're really excited to be part of the Discover Young Hackney festival again this year. We are working with a youth lead reporting team, All Aspects, throughout the festival this February to train and support them to cover the event.
Whether it's a photography, film or social networking that you're into, we'll help them to get interviews, photo opportunities and behind the scenes at events.
The All Aspects concept was created by one of our talented young trainees, Ondre, to offer young people practical experience and real career opportunities in creative media.
We will be running workshops that will equip the team with the skills and knowledge to report on the festival. These will include event reporting and both photography and video editing masterclasses.
Each member of All Aspects will be paired up with an industry mentor in their area of interest, who will give them feedback on their work, help them with their portfolio and give them inside industry knowledge and contacts.
The crew will then run a half day workshop on Monday 18 February to inspire other young people who want a career in creative media. It's still not too late to get involved though! There are still spaces available for young people to join the team.
To find out more or to get involved contact Lara on 202 3556 5772 or email lara@poachedcreative.org.uk.

Do a great deal - buy social
Poached Creative is proud to have
delivered the design and messaging for Social Enterprise UK’s Buy Social
campaign, which launched yesterday.
Social Enterprise UK, the national body
representing social enterprises, aims to broker at least 500 deals between
social enterprises in the year-long campaign.
As a social enterprise communications
agency, Poached Creative is always looking to spread the word on the benefits
of the social economy and already uses a range of social suppliers.
Jessica Smith, Poached Creative
director, said:
“We use social enterprises for our
banking, CRB checks and printing needs and we’ve found we’re able to get what
we need at a good price, while achieving a social and environmental impact
beyond our own activities as the campaign says when we buy social we do a
great deal more.
“The Buy Social campaign is a fantastic
opportunity for us to show what we can do creatively. We harness the untapped creativity of long-term unemployed
people, who we train to work in communications.
The Information Gap
Social Enterprise UK research found that
88% of social enterprises would like to buy from other social enterprises but 1
in 4 have no social enterprises in their supply chain.
While social enterprises compete well
with other suppliers on quality and price, potential buyers in the social
sector don’t know where to find each other.

Sign up to finding a new social supplier

word.

Choose Life. Drop the Knife campaign launch
A group of 16-19 year olds from
Southwark has collaborated with some of London’s top creative talent to launch
a poster campaign with the hard-hitting message that knife crime can only end
in two ways – prison or death.
The 15 young men in the group have all
been personally affected by knife crime and want to reach out to other young
people who may be in danger of falling into gang culture and a life of crime.
Over 10 weeks the group focused
their ideas, planned and created the poster campaign with the help of
award-winning photographer Niall O’Brien, top illustration agency Moose and
Yeti and creative social enterprise Poached Creative.
The poster was launched at an event
on Thursday 12 January held at Art Against Knives’ gallery in Shoreditch.
Raj Khan, 19, said:
"After nine stabbings in the
Rockingham Estate between 2009 and 2010 we wanted to do something about it. We
hope this poster campaign will influence young people to put down the knives
and show them that there’s a path other than crime.”
Jessica Smith, Director of Poached
Creative, said:
“The young people involved in this
project have been determined to create a poster that will reach others like
them and reduce the number of deaths and injuries due to knife crime in London.
Youth-led projects like this help young people feel part of their community and
build skills that will help them in the future.”
Southwark charity Faces in Focus, in partnership with Connexions, provided them with advice, information, education and peer support.

Young people like JRC are among London’s hidden homeless, moving from place to place not really knowing if it is safe or when they will have to move on next.
Crisis estimates that there are more than 400,000 hidden homeless in Great Britain.

23 November 2011Viewpoint Magazine features Paralympic games website
The Paralympic Games website that Poached Creative have been working on with Heart n Soul has been featured in Mencap's magazine, Viewpoint (Page 32).
The website which was launched by six young people with learning disabilities, features three paralympic sports that will take place in the paralympics in 2012. These are swimming, athletics, table tennis and they also cover wheelchair rugby.
The Paralympic games are going to be a big event for London and so it is important that information is more accessible for people, especially those with learning disabilities. Heart n Soul's website makes this possible, "...We also want to help people with learning disabilities to engage with the internet and social media, and we hope the website will encourage that." Poached helps to launch Paralympics website
A group of young people with learning disabilities and a keen interest in media today launches a new website packed with accessible information about the 2012 Paralympics.
The London Paralympic Games, which open on 29 August 2012, will be the first Paralympics to allow athletes with learning disabilities to compete since the Spanish team faked their disabilities at the Sydney Games in 2000.
Heart and Soul’s Media Team wanted to create a place where people with learning disabilities could find out about the Games and get involved in disability sport.
Lilly Cook, 21, who is part of the Media Team and has been volunteering with Poached Creative said:
Lilly Cook, 21, who is part of the Media Team and has been volunteering with Poached Creative said:
“I can’t really believe we’ve done it. Going to International Paralympic Day was probably the best thing because we got to interview lots of Paralympians.”
The Media Team have been working since May, with the help of Poached Creative, to plan the website, research the Paralympics and create content including photos, video interviews and written articles.
The website features video interviews from wheelchair athlete David Weir and table tennis hopeful Will Bayley. It covers the three sports open to people with learning disabilities – swimming, athletics and table tennis – and also covers wheelchair rugby.

The media team, made up of people with learning disabilities, is creating a website on the 2012 Paralympics so the event in Trafalgar Square was the ideal opportunity to get some interviews for the new site.
We witnessed Oscar Pistorius, known as 'the fastest man on no legs' running on the track outside the National Gallery and spoke to Paralympic table tennis player Will Bayley and wheelchair athlete David Weir about their hopes for 2012.
Still hungry for news, the media team did the rounds of the athletes promoting the day, speaking with Paralympic swimmers, fencers, boccia players and footballers.
The new website - The Games Through Our Eyes - launches at Heart n Soul's Squidz Club on Friday 23 September. Take a sneak peak at the homepage. Keep track of what the media team is up to on their Posterous blog.
